Types of tumble dryers
Vented tumble dryers draw air from the room, heat it, and expel the moist air through a vent or hose, usually connected to an external wall or window.
Condenser dryers collect moisture from your laundry into a removable tank, which you simply empty when full.
The best choice for energy efficiency is a heat pump tumble dryer. Instead of letting hot air out, they reuse it to pump it through your clothes at lower temperatures.

How to choose the right tumble dryer
Think about where you'll keep your new tumble dryer before you buy it. A freestanding model is best if it will be seen. An integrated machine that blends in with your cabinets might be a better choice if you want it to fit nicely in your kitchen or utility layout.
A variety of drum sizes are available for tumble dryers, ranging from 7 kg models to roomy 10 kg options. You should choose the capacity that works best for your family and how often you do laundry. It's also important to make sure that your washing machine and tumble dryer can handle the same amount of laundry so that you don't have to wait for half a load to dry.
Key features to look for
- Load capacity – Choose a capacity that matches your laundry habits. It’s also a good idea to match the capacity with your washing machine.
- Sensor Dry – Clever sensors in the drum monitor moisture levels and stop the cycle once the desired dryness is reached.
- Reverse tumbling – The drum rotates in both directions to reduce creases and prevent clothes from tangling.
Energy efficiency and running costs
The UK A-G energy label is used to rate tumble dryers, which makes it easy to see how efficient they are. Models with an A rating use a lot less energy than models with a lower rating.
The price of a tumble dryer depends on several things, including the type, energy rating, load size, and energy prices. The current limit on energy prices is about 24.67p* per kWh. The table below shows the yearly cost of each kind of dryer.
| Type | Energy Use (full load) | Cost per cycle/Annual cost |
| Heat Pump |
~2.16 kWh |
53-63p/£58-£75 |
| Condenser | ~5.2 kWh | £1.27-£1.51/£145-£179 |
| Vented | ~5.34 kWh | £1.54/£147-£184 |
To reduce running costs, you can:
- Clean the filter regularly, ideally after every use, and empty the water tank to keep the dryer running efficiently.
- Use eco cycles when you can.
- If you want to avoid over-drying, dry similar fabrics together.
- Don't overload the drum; leaving enough room for air to flow can speed up the drying process.

FAQs
Q. What is a heat pump tumble dryer?
Heat pump dryers are the most energy-efficient models on the market. Instead of pumping heat out through a vent, it reuses it repeatedly, wringing out moisture each time without ever throwing the heat away.
Q. How long should a tumble dryer last?
A tumble dryer should last for 10-15 years, but this depends on use, maintenance, and build quality. A typical rule of thumb is that if a repair costs more than half the price of a replacement, and the machine is over 8 years old, replacing it is usually the better option.
Q. How do you clean a tumble dryer?
It’s important to clean the lint filter regularly to keep it running efficiently. Most dryers have a primary filter just inside the door. Some heat pump or condenser models may also have a secondary filter at the bottom front corner, so check your manual if you’re not sure.
Once the machine has cooled, gently lift out the filter and remove the collected fluff. For stubborn debris, use a vacuum cleaner on a low setting, or run the filter under a tap with the lint side facing down. Don’t forget to clean the housing too. Ensure the filter is completely dry before replacing it.
Q. How much does it cost to run a heat pump tumble dryer?
Costs depend on the electricity rate, the level of dampness in your clothes, and the number of loads you run per week. On average, a cycle uses between 1.5 and 2 kWh. At the current rate of 24p kWh, you can expect to pay around 36-48p per cycle. If you do four loads a week, that’s around £6-8 per month, or £75-100 per year.
Q. Do you offer installation and disposal?
Yes, we offer setup, installation or removal services at a small additional cost. Check the product page or our terms of sale for details.
