Right Capacity Oven

Choosing the Right Capacity Oven

Your kitchen. It’s the heart of your home: a busy, happy space where you enjoy time eating with family and friends.

And working hard here every day is your oven – especially if you’re someone who regularly bakes, roasts, entertains or batch-cooks.

But ovens come in a range of different sizes, which can be confusing. Here, we explain how to choose the right oven capacity for your home.

What is oven capacity?

Oven capacity is the space inside your oven and is measured in litres.

The average capacity of a single electric or gas oven is 60 litres.

The average capacity of a double oven ranges from 70 to 100 litres, although some models can be as large as 130 litres. Double ovens are ideal for larger families or those who enjoy entertaining.

How to choose the right capacity oven for your home

Whether you’re buying a gas or electric cooker or a built-in oven with separate gas, electric or induction hob, here are three things you should always consider first:

1. How big is your household?

It’s not rocket science: the bigger your family, the bigger oven capacity you’ll need.

For medium-sized households (3 to 4 people): a gas or electric oven with 60 litres capacity will be big enough to take care of everyday meals.

For additional capacity and speed, you could buy a combi microwave oven too.

For large households (5 people or more): look for an oven with 65 litres capacity or more, like the Beko AeroPerfect CIMY91X 60cm Built In Single Multi-function Oven whose generous 73-litre capacity makes it the perfect choice.

It also has 5 different oven functions (including electric grill) and handy AeroPerfect tech for fast and even cooking – plus an A energy rating to help cut your energy use.

2. What type of food do you enjoy cooking?

Consider what you typically eat and how you prepare it.

Some people use their oven daily. Others favour the speed and energy efficiency of cooking on their electric, gas, or induction hob – or in a combination microwave oven – for everyday meals, and reserve their oven for baking, batch cooking, or weekend roasts.

If you enjoy multi-dish meals, choose a single oven with several shelf slots and fan-assisted cooking for even cooking throughout – like the Beko AeroPerfect CIMY91X 60cm Built In Single Multi-function Oven.

Or if you have the kitchen space (see Tip 3) a double oven could be the answer as it lets you juggle different types of cooking (say, baking and grilling) at the same time.

3. How much space do you have in your kitchen?

Nobody wants to get excited about their new oven, only to find it won’t fit in their kitchen on the day it’s being installed.

So, whether you’re buying a freestanding gas or electric cooker, a built-in oven, or a built-under oven to match your sleek kitchen design, always get the measuring tape out first.

Remember to ensure there’s enough surrounding room to open the oven door fully, too.

If space in your kitchen is especially tight, an oven with a fully retractable door which tucks neatly away (rather than swinging open) could be the answer – like the NEFF Slide & Hide oven.

The good news is that the width and depth of most single and double ovens is standard across manufacturers. It’s the height of your oven you must double-check, as this will vary depending on what type of cooker or oven you want to buy.
