Hotpoint in 1911 How it all began

In the early 1900s Earl Richardson, an electric meter reader from California, invented a new electric iron. The iron was designed with the heating element situated down the whole length of the iron, converging at the point. This meant it was 'hot at the point', and so he gave the iron the name Hotpoint. In 1911 Hotpoint was officially founded with the formulation of the 'The Hotpoint Electric Heating Company' with the major product being the Hotpoint iron. From that point on Hotpoint has never looked back and has continued to grow, innovate and introduce breakthrough technologies ever since.

The brand back then...
  • Hotpoint was a completely unknown brand, it was as sales of the new Hotpoint ironrapidly increased that Hotpoint began to become a household name.
  • The Hotpoint name started off in the USA, it was in the early 1920s that Hotpoint really started to grow in the UK with a modest turnover within the first year.
  • Hotpoint was the fastest growing company in its field, a strong leader from the start!
  • It was thanks to women gaining the right to vote in 1918 that Hotpoint could really expand its product offering. Women were no longer expected to manage with the bare essentials - they demanded help with their daily chores. This allowed Hotpoint to grow with the introduction of two different washing machines, making the 1920s a very successful period for Hotpoint.
